What to expect during the first appointment
I typically set aside 90 minutes for our initial session. We will review and complete a brief amount of paperwork and review insurance information. Please bring your insurance card (if you plan to use insurance) and your photo ID. The intake session provides an opportunity to:
Explore the concern(s) that brought you to therapy
Clarify what you hope to gain from therapy
Determine if my services are appropriate for your needs
See if you are comfortable working with me
Discuss the therapy process and my approach to therapy
Learn about my office policies, procedures, privacy and confidentiality
If we determine we are not a good “fit” and that your goals and needs would be better addressed with another clinician, I will gladly provide you with referrals to another clinician.
Useful websites for finding the right therapist for you:
Appointment Frequency
Appointments will ordinarily be 45-55 minutes long. I suggest that we meet weekly for the first 4 sessions in order to determine if we are a good fit for working together. After 4 sessions we can then assess the frequency needed and adjust accordingly. Some individuals like coming to therapy weekly, others feel that bi-weekly or monthly works for them. I will also offer my professional recommendations and am open to the schedule that works best for you.
Confidentiality
What we discuss during our sessions is confidential, within the limits of the law. Your privacy is protected by regulations established by HIPPA.
Cancellations
Because the success of therapy depends on the regularity and continuity of our meetings, the expectations is that we will meet regularly at a time we mutually agree upon. Once we agree on a time, I will reserve that time for you. It is understandable that on occasion you will need to cancel or reschedule a session. If it is necessary to reschedule or cancel an appointment, I ask that you provide me with at least 24 HOURS notice. If you miss your appointment or notify me of your cancellation less than 24 hours before your appointment time, you will be charged a cancellation fee of $75.00.
